TAYLOR — No one was injured in a ceiling fire in the kitchen at Regency Nursing Home, 12575 Telegraph, on Friday.
There were no reported injuries from the fire, which was ignited at about 4 p.m. by a plumber’s torch during repair work, Deputy Fire Chief Dan Reynolds said.
The ceiling space where the fire began was over the kitchen, which meant that it was above the sprinkler system and kept it from being activated, Reynolds said.
About 400 gallons of water was used to extinguish the blaze, Reynolds said.
Three fire engines, one ladder truck and command staff responded to the fire. Engine crews stretched a hose inside and began opening ceiling spaces to extinguish the flames.
The five-story building has 220 residents, but Reynolds and Battalion Chief Glen Ross decided against evacuating because the fire and smoke were contained.
The kitchen area and food service to the facility are closed for repair work and a state inspection, Fire Department officials said.
