Laid off firefighters in Taylor brave the heat to help others... MDA "Fill the Boot" http://www.firefightingnews.com/article.cfm?articleID=98734 The following was sent to the MPFFU from Sarah Grutza, who is a fundraising coordinator for MDA. Congratulations to Taylor on a job well done and to all the other locals in Michigan that have helped raise money for MDA. Hello, I just wanted to pass along a quick note about the Taylor Fill the Boot last weekend. In the four years I have been working with MDA, I have not seen anything as impressive. Taylor’s usual $11,000- $12,000 total is fantastic and is due to the hard work and dedication of their Fill the Boot Coordinator Bryan Schwesing. With all of the lay offs (one of which was him) I did not have high expectations and told him we have NO PROBLEM with taking this year off, you have a lot on your plate. He looked at me like I was crazy and said they were doing FTB regardless. They were out in the streets from 10am – 6pm Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of last weekend. The off duty guys, laid off guys, and the on duty guys (some of which were on 72 hour shifts) were out there as much as they could. They even stayed over on Sunday to help out for a couple more hours. It was in the high 90’s all weekend, 100% humidity, and even some thunderstorms….they NEVER quit…. Bryan sets up the Fill the Boot to go along with the Telegraph cruise so we had special T Shirts printed and set up a booth along Telegraph. Bryan and some of the other guys had their wives and kids out there helping to sell shirts. A couple of our MDA families attended as well. I cant even begin to explain how happy it made the Skeens and Persingers to know that even though 19 fire fighters were with out jobs, they were still out there fighting for their kids. The total they raised (not including T Shirt sales) was $16,642.89….I still tear up a little when I think about the total! I was so truly inspired by this local last weekend….they are absolutely phenomenal human beings. I am sure you have seen the article, but I have attached the link below, I am so happy that there was some press not only for Taylor but for all of MPFFU. I know the commitment comes from the top down with the MPFFU and with all of the challenges that you are facing, it means even more this year that we have your support. It has not gone unnoticed by the staff or by any of our families. Thank you again, Sarah M Grutza
Our Union helps deliver pizzas for the day with one of our local pizzarias. Toarmina's Pizza allowed us to get involved during fire prevention week. We not only passed out pizzas, but we also installed smoke alarms to the residents that needed one.
